Homegrown terrorism is a growing concern for U.S. intelligence

Amplifyd from www.csmonitor.com

Homegrown terrorism a growing concern for US intelligence

The nation’s top intelligence official warned this week of the threat posed by “homegrown terrorism,” though he said there was no evidence yet of an organized terrorist network operating in the US.

A small number of American Muslims are engaged in extremist activities at home and abroad, said Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair Tuesday at a Senate hearing. Their focus remains largely overseas, he said, but the threat to the homeland from Americans with links to radicals abroad remains troubling.

“We are concerned that the influence of inspirational figures such as Anwar al-Awlaqi will increasingly motivate individuals toward violent extremism,” Mr. Blair said. Mr. al-Awlaqi is the radical Yemeni cleric linked to Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the alleged Fort Hood shooter, as well possibly to Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab the Nigerian who attempted to blow up an American airliner in Detroit on Christmas Day.

Democrats in Congress balk at Obama’s debt outlook

President Barack Obama’s 2011 budget got a cool — at times frosty — reception Tuesday from the lawmakers he needs most, as congressional Democrats offered a host of reasons they’re skeptical of the White House plan.

The biggest one: Obama’s proposal envisions adding $8.5 trillion to the national debt over the next decade.

a chorus of lawmakers also wanted tougher action to curb future budget deficits.Read more at www.mcclatchydc.com

Iran launched a home-built satellite today

Amplifyd from news.yahoo.com
Iran hails successful satellite launch
Iran hailed the successful launch of a home-built satellite on Wednesday amid Western concerns it is using its nuclear and space industries to develop atomic and ballistic weapons.
The West suspects Iran of secretly trying to build an atomic bomb and fears the technology used to launch space rockets could be diverted into developing long-range ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. Read more at news.yahoo.com

Virginia’s Democratic-controlled Senate voted to make it illegal to require individuals to buy health insurance

Amplifyd from www.washingtonpost.com

Virginia Senate bills say no to requiring health insurance

Virginia’s Democratic-controlled state Senate passed measures Monday that would make it illegal to require individuals to purchase health insurance, a direct challenge to the party’s efforts in Washington to reform health care.
The bills, a top priority of Virginia’s “tea party” movement, were approved 23 to 17 as five Democrats who represent swing areas of the state joined all 18 Republicans in the chamber in backing the legislation.
The votes came less than a week after President Obama implored Democrats in Washington not to abandon their health-care efforts, urging them in his State of the Union address not to “run for the hills” on the issue.Read more at www.washingtonpost.com

Obama’s own optimistic projections: Deficits won’t return to sustainable levels for 10 years

Amplifyd from www.nytimes.com

WASHINGTON — In a federal budget filled with mind-boggling statistics, two numbers stand out as particularly stunning, for the way they may change American politics and American power.

The first is the projected deficit in the coming year, nearly 11 percent of the country’s entire economic output.
But the second number, buried deeper in the budget’s projections, is the one that really commands attention: By President Obama’s own optimistic projections, American deficits will not return to what are widely considered sustainable levels over the next 10 years.
Unless miraculous growth, or miraculous political compromises, creates some unforeseen change over the next decade, there is virtually no room for new domestic initiatives for Mr. Obama or his successors.
Beyond that lies the possibility that the United States could begin to suffer the same disease that has afflicted Japan over the past decade. As debt grew more rapidly than income, that country’s influence around the world eroded.Read more at www.nytimes.com

Obama hopes to expand several stimulus programs in his budget.

Amplifyd from money.cnn.com
They’re not calling it Stimulus 2, but the Obama administration wants to extend the life of several Recovery Act provisions by building them into the federal budget.

The president’s $3.8 trillion budget for fiscal 2011, unveiled Monday, calls for giving states more money for Medicaid and infrastructure projects, as well as renewing tax breaks for workers, small businesses and municipalities issuing bonds. It also requests additional funding for Obama’s educational reform initiative, Race to the Top.

But none of Obama’s budget measures will take effect unless Congress incorporates them into legislation. And, at the moment, “stimulus” is not the most popular word on Capitol Hill.

Obama’s $3.83T budget would affect Texas in many ways …

Amplifyd from www.chron.com

The Obama administration is unveiling a $3.83 trillion federal budget today that contains a double dose of bad news for the Houston area: cancellation of NASA’s Constellation mission to the moon and an end to tax breaks for energy exploration.

Ending the Constellation program is one of hundreds of spending reductions proposed by the White House to reverse the highest government deficits in U.S. history. The elimination of tax incentives widely used by oil, gas and coal companies — and new fees on energy producers — would reduce the deficit by an estimated $40 billion over 10 years.

The proposed budget, to be released today by White House budget director Peter Orszag, hopes to reduce the flow of red ink from 5 percent of the U.S. economy this year to 3 percent by 2015.

Great story on Round Rock area organizations helping out in Haiti

Amplifyd from www.rrleader.com
Locals aid in relief to Haitians
1,768 miles.

That’s the approximate distance between Round Rock and the island-nation of Haiti where an earthquake estimated to be the worst ever to strike the impoverished country occurred on Jan. 12. But distance is not stopping local business, organizations, churches and individuals from taking action in Haiti relief efforts.

Some are sending medical supplies, food, first aid and shoes to the devastated country, others are sending funds and some have moved to Haiti to assist in the care of an orphanage’s children.

Here are five stories from local Round Rock, Williamson County, and Austin area groups and people fighting for Haiti.

Continuing to push for combat status for Ft. Hood victims

Amplifyd from www.texasinsider.org

Carter Calls for Secretary of Defense to Declare Combat Status for Ft. Hood Attack

john-carter(WASHINGTON, DC) – The Secretary of Defense has the authority and should award the Purple Heart to those killed or wounded in the Fort Hood attack, eliminating the need for Congressional action, according to House Republican Conference Secretary John Carter, who represents Fort Hood in Congress.

Carter today officially wrote Secretary Robert M. Gates that he was “deeply disappointed” that the DOD report on the attack “not only ignored the clear radical Islamic facet of the incident,” but also failed to designate the attack as either an international terrorist attack or an act of combat by an enemy of the United States.
